Build a better life after heart disease with TCMH Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning.   Commonly referred to as “cardiac rehab”, the goal of the program is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, another cardiac event or death.

Indications for Cardiac Rehab

Have a documented diagnosis of a heart attack within the past 12 months

Have had coronary bypass surgery

Have stable angina

Have had heart valve repair or replacement

Have had percutanious transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or coronary stenting

Have had a heart or heart-lung transplant

TCMH Cardiac Rehab

The cardiac rehabilitation program at Texas County Memorial Hospital is staffed by personnel who are trained in both basic and advanced life support techniques.  They are trained in providing exercise therapy for coronary disease patients.  The program is supervised by a physician on the medical staff at TCMH.

TCMH offers “Phase II” for cardiac rehab patients.  Phase II is comprehensive and individualized based on each patient’s specific healthcare needs.   Phase II of cardiac rehab includes the following:

A medical evaluation by a physician.

Prescribed exercise designed to help restore strength and endurance.  Each patient receives a personalized exercise plan.  Exercise may be very structured, including ECG monitoring.

Risk modification is also personalized for each patient.

Each patient’s medications will be monitored during cardiac rehab.  Appropriate and teaching about medications will be provided to each patient as needed.

Risk factor modification will be individualized for each patient.  Risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes.

Counseling will assist the patient in understanding and managing the heart disease process and how it is related to returning to work or other activities of daily living.  Physical limitations will be discussed. Emotional support is also recognized as an important aspect of the program.

Combining all aspects of cardiac rehabilitation for patients improves functional capacity and quality of life, reduces risk factors and may create a sense of well-being and optimism about the future.

Before Cardiac Rehab…

You must have a referral from your healthcare provider to begin the cardiac rehabilitation program.

After your healthcare provider makes your referral, make an appointment with the TCMH Cardiac Rehabilitation department by calling (417) 967-0408.

A cardiac rehab regimen usually lasts for a 12-week period with 3 sessions each week.  The TCMH Cardiac Rehabilitation Department will work with patients to accommodate individual scheduling needs.

Most private insurers, including Medicare and Medicaid, provide coverage for the 36 sessions of cardiac rehabilitation.  The TCMH Business Office can answer any questions you may have regarding your cardiac rehab bill by calling (417) 967-1285.

If you need a ride to your cardiac rehab appointment, contact the TCMH Medivan, the non-emergency transportation service of the hospital.  A small fee will take you anywhere you need to go within the county for healthcare related services.  The Medivan is wheelchair accessible and child safety seat equipped.  Anyone can ride.  Contact the Medivan at (417) 967-1311.
