Married Physician Duo Make Texas County and TCMH New Home
June 29, 2018The second annual Pirates of the Piney Cardboard Regatta was held Saturday, June 16 at Boiling Springs Resort. The proceeds raised were $3,661. The profit from the event will go to the new TCMH Surgery Center.
The event included live music by Jason Allen Burbey, food, a cardboard boat race, and a rubber duck race.
There were nine participants in the boat race. All participants built their boats and decorated them prior to the event. The participants included hospital employees, their families and some community members.
The boat race consisted of three heats and a final round. The winner of each heat raced in the final round to claim the title of “Fastest Ship.” The winners of the title were John and Liz McCarty.
In addition to the “Fastest Ship” award, there were prizes given in three other award categories. The award for the “Most Creative Boat” went to Connie Brooks and Kayla Brawley. The winner of the “People’s Choice” were Jenny and Hannah Sawyer. The “Bloody Bones” award for the most dramatic sinking ship went to Dr. Jason Loden and his brother, Joseph Loden.
The McCarty’s sold their cardboard boat to raise more money for the surgery center. John and Jenny Sawyer bought the winning boat for $200.
Immediately following the boat race was the rubber duck race. First, second and third place participants received cash prizes. Evania Ryan won first, Dacy Kirkman won second, and Ellen Willis won third.
This year’s event saw an increase in proceeds raised by approximately $500.
“This event was created as a fun and different fundraiser to support the hospital,” Bill Bridges, EMS Director and event planner, said. “It’s a grassroots, employee run fundraiser that helps the hospital and, in turn, patient care.”
“We want to thank Boiling Springs Resort, Piney River Brewing Company, Grellner Distributing, and Justin Shelby, State Farm Agent, for their support,” Bridges said.
