“From Fear to Faith”: TCMH Team’s Compassionate Care Turns Critical Diagnosis into Story of Trust, Teamwork, and Healing

What began as a frightening medical emergency for Bill Riker and his wife, Brenda, from Roby, quickly became a powerful testament to compassionate, coordinated care at Texas County Memorial Hospital.

From the moment Bill entered the emergency room to the day of his discharge, the Riker family says they experienced a level of professionalism, teamwork, and empathy that exceeded every expectation.

“We cannot begin to express our sincere gratitude to the TCMH staff,” Brenda said. “From the moment we registered in the ER to discharge, there is not one complaint we could mention. Every step was handled quickly, efficiently, and with such kindness.”

Bill was promptly registered and evaluated, then admitted by Paul Schaefer, DO, emergency room physician. Kristina Grant, DO, family medicine and obstetrics physician,  and the nursing team ensured he was settled into his room quickly, with diagnostic testing including blood work and an MRI that were completed without delay. Those tests revealed a serious infection requiring immediate attention.

Throughout the experience, Brenda said one physician, Jonathan Carr, MD, internal medicine physician, made a particularly lasting impression.

“Dr. Carr was on top of everything,” she said. “His knowledge and attention to detail were incredible, but it was his compassion that meant the most to us. He made sure we understood what was happening and helped guide us through some very difficult decisions.”

When the possibility of amputation was introduced, the Rikers were understandably overwhelmed.

“When we heard the word ‘amputation,’ we just looked at each other in disbelief,” Brenda said. “I asked Dr. Carr honestly if we were in good hands, and his trust in the team helped us move forward. That meant everything to us in that moment.”

Bill underwent surgery with Sharon Anderson, podiatrist, and what initially appeared to be a more extensive procedure resulted in a far better outcome than expected.

“We went in thinking he might lose much more, but thankfully, it was limited,” Brenda said. “We truly believe that was a blessing, combined with the skill and care of the medical team.”

Brenda emphasized that the exceptional care extended well beyond the physicians.

“The nurses, OR staff, physical therapy, dietitian, janitorial staff and even the cafeteria workers were all so kind and professional,” she said. “The cleanliness of the facility was superb, and every single department worked together like a well-oiled machine.”

One moment, in particular, stood out as something Brenda had never experienced before.

“This is the first time I’ve ever felt comfortable leaving my husband in the hospital,” she said. “I was able to go home, rest, and take care of things, knowing he was in good hands. That peace of mind is something I can’t even put into words.”

Having received care at other facilities in the past, the Rikers said their experience at TCMH was different.

“We weren’t treated like a number, but we were treated like people,” Brenda said. “That made all the difference.”

She also praised the teamwork displayed by staff across all departments.

“I’ve worked in special events for years, and it’s hard to get a team to work together the way your staff does,” she said. “You have a rock-solid team, and it shows in everything you do.”
