Gentle cesarean birth

Gentle cesarean birth

When c-sections are needed and especially when the c‑section is pre-planned, a gentle c-section at TCMH may be an option for you.

The gentle c-section features:

  • A clear drape so Mom can witness the birth of her baby (the incision cannot be seen due to placement)
  • Music of choice playing, if possible
  • Immediate skin-to-skin contact with baby and Mom or Dad or both
  • Placing baby on Mom’s chest during the remainder of the procedure so baby can start to nurse if he or she desires
  • Keeping Mom, Dad, and baby together in the recovery unit to allow for nursing and bonding
  • All IVs, straps, etc. on Mom’s non-dominant arm so she can easily touch and hold baby
  • Performing all newborn tests while baby is on Mom’s chest, if possible
  • Ensuring that all medications are approved for breastfeeding, if possible
