July 13, 2018Even in the heat, people lined up early to get a medical screening from Texas County Memorial Hospital Staff at the 82nd Annual Intercounty Picnic on Friday, June 29.
TCMH staff spent the morning and early afternoon at the Licking Fairgrounds offering $25 medical screenings to the community. The medical screenings included a blood draw with multiple lab screenings, blood pressure checks, and several educational components.
A total of 126 medical screenings were offered, a similar number to the medical screenings offered in previous years. Participants were not required to have a doctor’s orders to get a medical screening.
Participants will receive the results from the blood tests as well as a guide to help interpret the results in the mail a couple weeks after the event. After receiving their results, participants can choose to take them to their primary care doctor if they wish to follow up.
“If the results of the blood tests show any critical numbers, we try to give them a call and let them know they should see their doctor,” Evania Ryan, TCMH laboratory director said.
“This is such a good thing for our community,” Connie Brooks, TCMH education director said. She added, “We are offering these screenings for a price that you can’t beat; no insurance required.”
“We see a lot of people who simply can’t afford to have these kinds of tests run through the hospital or their primary care doctor,” Brooks said. “This allows those patients to gain access to a portion of healthcare that they may forego otherwise.”
“Intercounty hugely appreciates the service TCMH brings to our members,” Heather Satterfield, Intercounty director of communications, said. She added, “Our members don’t care what the weather brings each year; they will stand in line in the heat or rain to make sure they get to take advantage of the opportunity.”
In addition to the blood draws and blood pressure checks, TCMH staff members provided education to the public on stroke and heart attack awareness and risk factors, healthy lifestyles, TCMH providers, and current services available through the hospital. TCMH also gave away a gift basket that included cook out supplies. Goldie Sims from Salem was the winner of the basket.
“TCMH has been offering screenings at the Intercounty Annual Picnic for over thirty years,” Wes Murray, TCMH chief executive office said.
Murray explained that TCMH and Intercounty Electric serve a lot of the same people, and this event provides a great opportunity to serve the community together.
“This event allows us to connect with the community in a way that we may not get to otherwise,” Murray said. He added, “It’s a great time to get together, meet people and let them know we are here for them.”
